People want to be lead

Yesterday I attended a great seminar offered by Seth Godin. He invited a select few individuals that are part of a “tribe” of leaders.

Seth said that people want to belong to communities (aka Tribes). Unfortunatley, their aren’t enough good leaders.

Every software project I was a part of, I emerged as the leader. It didn’t matter if I was the manager, an analyst, developer or tester. I shared my view of the goal and people followed. People from other groups gravitated to me to be part of the successful movement and be part of the “tribe.” We became a “team.”

Teams are yearning for leaders. They want to be part of something successful. Here is Seth’s slide on what people want from their leader:

Does this describe your project? Become the leader … make the team feel these emotional connections … you’ll become a successful leader no matter what your title.
