Emotional Attachment

Seth Godin wrote another good post that is applicable on how IT engages the business community. Sing it (please S I N G I T) talks about “For some reason, we work on the technique before we worry about adding the joy.”

I see this at all stages of CMMI. Technologists learn how to do something until it becomes a checklist of what to do when. What is missing is the shear joy of learning and working with individuals. Curiosity for people is absent. Instead, technologists are learning how to do something as good as needed in order to improve their resume. What a shame!

My questions for you are as follows:

  • - Who are the business people you are working with while you are learning the techniques and procedures?
  • - What are they like?
  • - What do they like to do?
  • - What is the joy of working with each individual?

We spend many hours “working.” Wouldn’t it be nice to enjoy working on something to a point where it becomes a passion?

Technologists love to learn. How about putting the techniques, process, and checklists to the side for a week. Why not try learning more about each business person on your current project? Finding commonality may actually help you find joy in what you are doing. It will help you Sing while you work on your techniques.
